
History
The undergraduate three year course B.A Criminology and Police Administration is introduced in the academic year 2018-2019 under the guidance of Dr.Remya Mariam Raju, Ph.D., with the objective of imparting a comprehensive understanding of the principles of Criminology as well as thebasic tenets of the Indian criminal justice system i.e. Police, Judiciary and Corrections. The students acquire knowledge through specializations in Theoretical Criminology, Criminal Law, Criminalistics, Penology, Criminal psychology, Victimology, Prison administration, Vigilance and Security management, Police administration, Contemporary forms of crimes etc. Practical applications of the subject include the field visits to all the criminal justice functionaries in the state, outdoor training and participation in National and Regional conferences/workshopsin order to receive hands on experience in the field. Guest and special lectures led by the criminal justice practitioners will be organized periodically to broaden their perspectives. The scope of the subject includes Police services, Correctional services, Security management, Human rights commission, National and International organizations, Non-Governmental organizations, Higher education including Doctoral programs and research.

International Day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking on June 26th 2019
33 students of Department of Criminology participated in the rally observing the International Day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking on June 26th 2019 organized by the Narcotic Control Bureau, Chennai Zonal Unit.

Awareness Programme
In Commemoration of 150th celebrations of our founder, an awareness programme was conducted on the topic ‘Social media crimes and its victimization’ for the eighth and ninth standard students of CCC Hindu Matriculation school ,Kakkalur on 13th February 2019 from 10.30 am to 12.30 pm. 150 students participated in the programme. The Guest of honour was Dr. LathaSubramaniam, Assistant Professor, Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice Administration. The Principal Mr.G.Palani welcomed the chief guest. Dr. Latha emphasized the need to be cautious while using the social media platforms. Majority of the students revealed that they had face book accounts despite knowing that FB account should be opened only after completing 18 years. Several applications like TikTok, Snapchat, Watsapp etc. can be dangerous and even fatal at times. Judicious handling of social media platforms especially forwarding sensitive information was advised and she ended the session by encouraging the students to play traditional games like pallankuzhi, physical games etc. The session was very interactive and the students did a couple of performances for the gathering. The programme ended with Dr. Remya thanking the students and the school management for their cooperation.

INAUGURAL FUNCTION
The inaugural function of the new course was held on June 11th 2018 at 11.30 a.m. The guests of honor were Professor R.Thilagaraj, Director (Academics) Centre for Excellence in Digital Forensics, Perungudi and Dr.S.Latha, Assistant Professor, University of Madras. The Honorary Secretary Sri M.Venkatesaperumal, Principal Dr.V.Lakshmi and Director, Dr.N.Rajendra Naidu had also graced the occasion. Professor R.Thilagaraj highlighted the need and scope of criminology in the current scenario in the inaugural address. Dr.S.Latha introduced the different specializations under the course in the special address. Dr.Remya Mariam Raju proposed the vote of thanks and concluded the inaugural program.
BRIDGE COURSE
Bridge course was conducted from June 12th to June 18th for the students to introduce the basic concepts required for the course and assessment was done based on these concepts.
SPECIAL LECTURE
Special lecture was conducted on the topic ‘Application of forensic science in criminal investigation’ on September 3rd 2018. The guest of Honor was Mr.S.Karthikeyan, Deputy Director (Retd.), State Forensics Department, Tamil Nadu. He explained the role of a forensic specialist in criminal investigation and in criminal trial. The session was very interactive and he responded to all the queries put forth by the students. The lecture has proven to be very inspiring and informative for the students.
SPECIAL LECTURE
Special lecture was conducted on the topic ‘Recent Crime trends in India’ on September 4th 2018. The guest of Honor was Dr.Hema Karthik, Senior Psychologist and Zonal Director General, National Crime Investigation Bureau. As per the feedback received from the students it was a very good learning experience, the lecture helped them in their understanding of criminal cases and its investigation especially cybercrimes.
SPECIAL LECTURE
Special lecture was organized along with the Gender Cell on the topic ‘Social media crimes and victimization’ on September 18th 2018. The guest of Honor was S.Latha, Assistant Professor, and University of Madras. Dr.N.S Swarnalatha delivered the welcome address. The principal Dr.V.Lakshmi highlighted the need for awareness of social media crimes among the students. The special lecture was fruitful for the students in the context of using the social media platform with great care. She has shared several cases of cyber-crimes she has come across making them aware of the need of judicious practice of handling social media.
SPECIAL LECTURES
Special lecture was conducted on the topic “Psycho-Criminogenic Assessment”on 22nd October 2018. The Guest of Honour was Dr Mohammed Rahim Kamaluddin. Lecturer from Social Sciences and Humanities, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, University of Kebangsaan Malaysia UKM. He had highlighted the need for using psychometric tests to predict criminal behaviour and thereby play a major role in crime prevention. The students found the lecture valuable as it helped them in understanding the importance of psychology in criminology and the advantages of it as well as in reducing the rate of crime with the aid of psychology. He also guided the students with various methods used in Psycho-Criminogenic Assessment of the criminals.
